How to Pay with Venmo

How do I shop in the Venmo app?

You can browse and purchase from select partners directly in the Venmo app—no app switching required.

To get started:

  1. Look for the tile on your Venmo feed (like “Order Food” or “Buy Tickets”)
  2. Allow location access when prompted so we can show you relevant nearby options
  3. Browse and select what you want, and tap Pay with Venmo
  4. Your purchase order will appear in your feed, where you can track it and split the cost with friend

What you need to know:

  • Availability varies by location and partner
  • You'll receive updates via email, text, or in-app notifications
  • There are no app fees from Venmo for placing orders
  • You can split costs with friends just like any Venmo payment

How can I set up Venmo as my payment method in another app?

When you’re checking out at a participating business in app:

  1. Look for and Tap the Venmo Button
  2. You'll be asked to link your Venmo account with that business
  3. Choose your payment method and complete your purchase

On a computer:

When selecting Venmo at checkout on a computer, you'll see a QR code. Scan the QR code with your phone to authorize the payment, select your payment method, and proceed with checking out.

Once linked, that business can charge your Venmo account for future purchases according to your agreement with them.

How does payment work?

When you pay with Venmo, you'll choose your payment method. If you select your Venmo balance and have enough to cover the purchase, it'll be deducted from your balance. If your balance isn't enough, you'll need to select a secondary payment method for the remaining amount.

For example, if you have $10 in your Venmo balance and your purchase is $12, $10 would be charged to your Venmo balance, and $2 would be charged to the backup payment method.

Venmo doesn't charge you a transaction fee for purchases, even if you use a credit card. The business pays the transaction fee, not you.

  2. Tap Connected Businesses and select the business
  3. Update your preferred payment method

To disconnect a business entirely:

  1. Go to Settings from the Me tab
  2. Tap Connected Businesses and select the business

Please keep in mind, any pending transactions will still be processed, and you can reconnect the business later.

Why cant I see the option for in app shopping?

In-app shopping and ordering experiences are currently available in select locations as we test and expand these features.

Availability depends on:

  • Your location
  • Partner availability in your area
  • Feature rollout status

If you don't see a specific option yet, we're working on making these features available to more users over time. Make sure you have the latest version of the Venmo app to access new features as they become available.

How do I track my order and split with friends?

After you place your order, you'll see it in your Venmo feed just like any other payment.

  1. Tap Split to send payment requests to friends
  2. Tap the transaction to see more details about your purchase
  3. Return to the original tile (like "Order Food" or "Buy Tickets") to see current and past purchases

You'll also receive updates via email or text, depending on the partner.

What if there's a problem with my in app purchase?

For issues with your food order—like wrong items, or refund requests—contact the partner directly.

You can reach them through:

  • Your order/purchase details in the Venmo app
  • Email and text notifications they send you
  • Their customer support channels

If you can't reach a resolution with them, contact Venmo support, and we'll work with you to help find a solution.  If you have an unauthorized charge or payment issue, contact Venmo support.

How do I receive a refund for my online purchases?

Once the merchant has issued your refund credit, it will be sent to Venmo to be processed. In most instances, refunds will be credited to the same payment method that you used for the original purchase. Sometimes, for various reasons, your refund will be credited to your Venmo account.

To check what payment method you used for the original purchase,

  1. Go to the Me tab
  2. Tap Transactions
  3. Select your original purchase
    • To see where your refund is going, select the transaction that states the merchant's name with refund next to it

Refunds may take up to 5 business days to process. If you have not received the refund after 5 business days, please contact us.

I would like to cancel my purchase.

Contact the business directly— they should be able to assist further.  You can also disconnect the business from Connected Business. If you are unable to come to a resolution with the business, please contact our Support team. While we don’t guarantee a refund, we’ll work with you to help you come to a solution.

  2. Tap Settings
  3. Select Get Help
