How can I use Venmo to pay businesses?
From the Venmo app: You can save Venmo as a payment method at participating merchants without visiting their site or app.
- Go to the Me tab
- Under Check out with Venmo, Select Link brands, pay fast
- Select the merchant you would like to link
- Log in using the credentials for that merchant's account
Here is what to expect depending on the merchant:
- At businesses that support Pay with Venmo, you’ll have the option to choose which linked payment method to pay with, including your Venmo balance (if we have verified your identity) and/or linked bank or card.
- At businesses that only support the Venmo Debit Card, your card details will be saved directly with that merchant.
It may take a few moments for the change to reflect on the merchant's end. This process is powered by Knot, a trusted third-party provider that securely updates your payment method at each merchant.
On a participating business app or website:
- Look for and Tap the Venmo Button
- You'll be asked to link your Venmo account with that business
- Choose your payment method and complete your purchase
On a computer:
When selecting Venmo at checkout on a computer, you should see a QR code. Scan the QR code with your phone to authorize the payment, select your payment method, and proceed with checking out.
Once complete, you should see a confirmation that Venmo has been added to your account. That business can charge your Venmo account for future purchases according to your agreement with them.
How does payment work?
When you pay with Venmo, you'll choose your payment method. If you select your Venmo balance and have enough to cover the purchase, it'll be deducted from your balance. If your balance isn't enough and the merchant accepts split payments, you'll need to select a secondary payment method for the remaining amount.
For example, if you have $10 in your Venmo balance and your purchase is $12, $10 would be charged to your Venmo balance, and $2 would be charged to the backup payment method.
Some things to know:
- Some merchants may require you to pay the full amount with a single payment method.
- If you are using your Venmo Balance, you must add a backup payment method in case your balance doesn’t cover the total.
Venmo doesn't charge you a transaction fee for purchases, even if you use a credit card. Some merchants may charge their own fee based on the payment method you choose. You should see any merchant-applied fees on the checkout screen before you confirm your payment.
How do I change or disconnect a payment method?
How you manage a connected business depends on how it was set up.
If you connected your Venmo account (as opposed to just the Venmo Debit Card):
To change your preferred payment method for a specific business:
- Go to Settings from the Me tab
- Tap Connected Businesses and select the business
- Update your preferred payment method
To disconnect a business entirely:
- Go to Settings from the Me tab
- Tap Connected Businesses and select the business
- Tap Discontinue payments
Please keep in mind that any pending transactions will still be processed, and you can reconnect the business later.
If you connected your Venmo Debit Card:
To change or remove your Venmo Debit Card at a merchant:
- Go to that merchant's website or app
- Update your payment method there directly.
Keep in mind, these merchants will not appear under Connected Businesses in your Venmo app.
To see the merchants linked to your Venmo Debit Card, go to the Me tab and select Link more brands. This will route you to Knot, where you can view all accounts connected to your Venmo or Venmo Debit Card.
What information is provided to the merchant for online purchases?
Venmo will provide the merchant with:
- Your full name
- Email address
- Phone number (if required by the merchant)
If a delivery for the purchase is needed, you may be required to supply your shipping and billing address directly to the merchant, or Venmo may supply it automatically.
Please keep in mind that your personal financial information is not broadly shared with businesses. In limited cases where it’s necessary to complete and ensure an accurate transaction, we may share only the specific details needed, such as your account balance and the last 4 digits of your card, with a designated partner. We’ll let you know before we do this.
