How can I set up Venmo as my payment method in another app?
When you’re checking out at a participating business in app:
- Look for and Tap the Venmo Button
- You'll be asked to link your Venmo account with that business
- Choose your payment method and complete your purchase
On a computer:
When selecting Venmo at checkout on a computer, you'll see a QR code. Scan the QR code with your phone to authorize the payment, select your payment method, and proceed with checking out.
Once linked, that business can charge your Venmo account for future purchases according to your agreement with them.
How does payment work?
When you pay with Venmo, you'll choose your payment method. If you select your Venmo balance and have enough to cover the purchase, it'll be deducted from your balance. If your balance isn't enough, you'll need to select a secondary payment method for the remaining amount.
For example, if you have $10 in your Venmo balance and your purchase is $12, $10 would be charged to your Venmo balance, and $2 would be charged to the backup payment method.
Some things to know:
- Some merchants may require you to pay the full amount with a single payment method.
- If you are using your Venmo Balance, you must add a backup payment method in case your balance doesn’t cover the total.
Venmo doesn't charge you a transaction fee for purchases, even if you use a credit card. The business pays the transaction fee, not you. Some merchants may charge their own fee based on the payment method you choose. You should see any merchant-applied fees on the checkout screen before you confirm your payment.
How do I change or disconnect a payment method?
To change your preferred payment method for a specific business:
- Go to Settings from the Me tab
- Tap Connected Businesses and select the business
- Update your preferred payment method
To disconnect a business entirely:
- Go to Settings from the Me tab
- Tap Connected Businesses and select the business
- Tap Discontinue payments
Please keep in mind, any pending transactions will still be processed, and you can reconnect the business later.
What information is provided to the merchant for online purchases?
Venmo will provide the merchant with:
- Your full name
- Email address
- Phone number (if required by the merchant)
If a delivery for the purchase is needed, you may be required to supply your shipping and billing address directly to the merchant, or Venmo may supply it automatically.
Please keep in mind that your personal financial information is not broadly shared with businesses. In limited cases where it’s necessary to complete and ensure an accurate transaction, we may share only the specific details needed, such as your account balance and the last 4 digits of your card, with a designated partner. We’ll let you know before we do this.
