How do I add my bank or card to Venmo?
To add a bank account to your Venmo profile from a computer, click here and select "Link Bank Account". Then, follow the instructions on the page.
To add a payment method from the Venmo app:
- Go to the Me tab
- Go to the Wallet section
- Scroll down to Banks and Cards
- Swipe to the left and tap on Add a bank or card
- Select your preferred verification method
There are a few important things to keep in mind when you add your payment methods:
- Do not enter the check number that appears after your account number. This can cause transfers to fail or be rejected by your bank.
-
When you add your bank account to Venmo manually, we'll send "microtransfers" to your bank account and withdraw them to verify ownership (these will each be $1 or less). To avoid any overdraft or other bank fees, make sure you have at least $2 in your bank account.
- Once you add a bank account to Venmo, we strongly recommend that you verify it before initiating any transfers. Venmo is not responsible for lost bank transfers as a result of incorrect bank credentials.
- Payments funded by credit cards are subject to our standard 3% fee
- Making purchases from authorized merchants does not incur a Venmo transaction fee, even if you use a credit card
- Some credit card providers also charge cash advance fees (possibly including an additional dollar amount or percentage rate, in addition to other possible cash advance service fees, including a higher APR) if you use your credit card to make payments to friends on Venmo
How many cards can I add to Venmo?
The 4 card rolling limit means that once you add a card to Venmo, it will count against your card limit for 6 months, even if you delete it. So, a card applies to this 4 card limit if it is was added fewer than 6 months ago (even if it has since been deleted).
Why am I getting an error when I try to add my bank account?
If you’re trying to add your bank account using instant verification, make sure you’re using the correct login information. There’s a limit to how many times you can attempt to add a bank account using instant verification in one day, so you may need to wait until the next day to try again.
You can also try adding the bank account using manual verification, but keep in mind it takes at least 1 full business day to complete this verification process (and you can’t make payments from the bank account until it’s verified).
If you need to send a payment right away, try adding the debit card associated with your bank account instead.
I'm getting an error when I try to add my card
If you’re having trouble adding your credit or debit card to Venmo, the best thing to do is reach out to your card issuer to confirm that there are no issues. Oftentimes cards are declined because of a recent zip code or address change - your card issuer should be able to tell you more.
If you are seeing an error message that you've reached the limit, you are likely hitting the rolling limit and will need to wait until it’s been 6 months since you first added a card. At this time, Venmo is not able to increase your limit above 4 cards. Additionally, we (Venmo) may change this limit at any time in our discretion.
Once the card is added there’s no way to edit or update just one piece of information for a card on your Venmo account. You’ll need to delete the old card from your account, then add the new/updated information as a new card.
