Safety & Security for Teen Accounts

How do I change my Teen Account Privacy Settings?

Parents & guardians can make changes to the Teen Account privacy settings in the Venmo app:

  1. Go to the Me tab
  2. Tap the down arrow next to your name in the top left-hand corner
  3. Select the Teen Account’s profile at the top
  4. Tap the Overview tab
  5. Tap Manage Settings under Privacy

Transactions made with a Teen Account or a Venmo Teen Debit Card will be set to private by default, meaning a payment sent by a Teen Account will only be visible to the parent or guardian, the sender, and the recipient of the payment.

What do the privacy options for my Teen Account mean?

  • Public: The transaction will be shared on the public feed, and anyone on the internet may be able to see it.
  • Friends only: The transaction will only be shared with the sender, the sender’s Venmo friends, the recipient, and the recipient’s Venmo friends. If the sender or recipient is a Teen User, the transaction is also visible to the Teen User’s parent or guardian who created the Teen Account.
  • Private: We will not share the transaction anywhere other than your Teen Account’s personal transactions feed, the personal feed of the other party to the transaction, and you. Keep in mind that if the payment recipient is another Teen Account, the parent or guardian that owns that Teen Account will also be able to see the payment.

Note: Teen Accounts are hidden from other users’ friend lists and user searches by default. The Teen Account friends list will also default to Private, but you can change these default settings. Your teen will be able to view the Teen Account privacy settings but cannot change any of the settings.

How can I track my Teen Account activity?

You can view Teen Account transactions in the Venmo app by following these steps:

  1. Go to the Me tab
  2. Tap the down arrow next to your name in the top left-hand corner
  3. Select which account you’d like to view
  4. Select the Transactions tab

You will be notified via email about any activity taking place on your Teen Account.

How can I block another user on my Teen Account?

Parents & guardians can block other users in the Venmo app with these steps:

  1. Go to the Me tab
  2. Tap the down arrow next to your name in the top left-hand corner
  3. Select which Teen account you want to block someone from Locate the user you would like to block
  4. Tap the user's profile photo to navigate to their profile
  5. Tap the three dots in the upper right corner of the screen
  6. Select Block User

Blocking another user means they won’t be able to send or request any payments from your Teen Account, and they will not show up in your Teen Account’s Venmo network.

Are there restrictions on where my teen can use their debit card?

Yes, we do not allow teens to use their debit cards with certain merchants, including ones that we may deem high-risk. If a teen attempts these transactions, we will decline them.
