Notice of chargeback
If a Venmo user files a chargeback on a payment sent to you, we’ll let you know. This type of payment dispute is filed directly with a card issuer or bank and can happen if the sender doesn't recognize or has an issue with a payment made with their debit or credit card.
If you don’t agree that the chargeback is valid, you can help us dispute it by providing information about the transaction within 10 days of receiving this notification.
Chargeback disputes typically take around 30 days while we work with the card company, and it can take up to 75 days for them to come to a final decision. Please note that decisions on chargebacks are made by the card-issuing bank, not Venmo.
Providing info about a chargeback
If we have requested information regarding a chargeback filed against a payment you received, please send an email to chargebackdisputes@venmo.com with additional information to help us dispute the chargeback. This can include:
- Valid tracking information in order to dispute the chargeback received
- Valid proof of a refund (either within or outside of PayPal) in order to dispute the chargeback
- Additional evidence for dispute (other than tracking information)
- Any communication between the sender and recipient
- Any additional evidence or information
- Accept liability for the chargeback
Filing a chargeback
When you file a chargeback with your card issuer, they will correspond with Venmo on your behalf about the case. For any updates on the case, please work with your card issuer directly.
In some cases, you may receive notice of a negative balance on your Venmo account, resulting from a chargeback. If this happens, your Venmo account will be temporarily suspended, and you'll receive a notification from Venmo explaining what happened.
- To pay Venmo back, you can visit venmo.com/addfunds from a web browser. After the payment posts to your Venmo account (this can take 3-5 business days), please contact our Support team so your account can be unfrozen.
Please note that filing a case with your financial institution doesn’t constitute notice of an Error to us. You may also file a dispute for any unauthorized activity or billing error issues for the full amount of the transaction with Venmo. However, you may not receive a refund from both Venmo and your financial institution.
