Temporarily Frozen Account from Failed Payments

My account is frozen due to a failed payment, what do I do?

If you received a notification that your account was frozen due to a failed payment, you can follow the in-app prompts to get your account back up and running. Tap Restore your account to get the process started. Alternatively, you can settle the payment by using a computer’s browser to visit venmo.com/recover.

It's fastest to use a debit card to fund the recovery payment. If you use a bank account, it may take up to 5 business days for the recovery payment to process. Your account would remain frozen until the full recovery is complete. You'll receive an email when your account unfreezes.

If you’re unable to pay back the full amount right now, you can make a partial payment by editing the repayment amount. Before selecting Pay, tap the payment amount and enter the amount you'd like to pay.

Any payments you receive on your Venmo account will automatically be applied to the amount you owe to Venmo.

Why did my original payment fail?

Bank payments can fail for a number of reasons. While Venmo doesn’t have visibility into the specific reason your transaction failed, your bank should be able to tell you exactly why. Some common reasons for failure are:

  • Exceeding the number of ACH transfers permitted on your account
  • Insufficient funds at the time of the transaction
