I need to cancel a Venmo payment
When you send a payment on Venmo, the money will be sent to the recipient right away. There isn't a way to cancel a payment once it's sent.
If you need help with a payment, there are specific steps you can take for certain scenarios:
- Payment is Pending: First, determine why the payment is pending.
- Recipient’s phone number or email address is unverified: Take back the payment or have your friend verify their info
- Payment is still processing with your bank: Contact your bank directly to request that the payment be canceled
- Payment is a purchase made with Venmo or a Venmo Debit Card: The transaction may still be processing with the merchant. Contact the merchant or see our article on Authorizations for more details.
- Learn more about pending payments
- Payment sent to a stranger: Gather details about who you meant to pay and contact our Support team
- Payment sent to wrong friend: Ask your friend to pay you back, or have them contact our Support team if they need help
- Issues with an international payment: Cross-border payments are processed differently from other Venmo payments. See our International Payments article for more details.
- Accidental duplicate payment: Ask the recipient to pay you back for the extra payment
- If you only sent one payment and see multiple charges on your bank statement, please contact our Support team
- Paid for a scam: Contact our Support team to report the issue
- Received payment from a stranger: Contact our Support team for help returning the payment
- Do not attempt to pay the stranger back on your own
