How can I download my tax documents from Venmo?
Near the end of January, Venmo will send you an email if you have tax forms available. Not all Venmo users will receive tax documents from Venmo.
If we’ve notified you about tax documents for your Venmo profile, you can access and download your tax documents for the previous calendar year in the Venmo app or in your Venmo Tax Document Center on the website.
In the Venmo app:
- Go to Settings
- Tap Tax Documents
On the Venmo website:
- Sign in to your account
- In the sidebar, open Settings
- Click Tax Documents
Can Venmo change how my transaction was classified?
No. Venmo cannot reclassify transactions after they have been processed. If the sender selected "Goods and Services" when sending the payment, that classification cannot be changed to "Friends and Family" or any other category.
Although a transaction may be reportable by Venmo, it’s possible that the transaction is not taxable. We encourage you to review the IRS FAQs on Form 1099-K and, if necessary, work with your tax advisor to account for this when preparing your taxes.
How can I request a correction on my tax document?
Once your tax documents are available, we recommend downloading and reviewing them.
If you see a need to make changes to any information on your tax forms, you can request corrections from the Venmo website (not the app). Here's how:
Note: The ability to submit changes through this page is available for the current tax year and Form 1099-K only.
- Start by signing in to your Venmo account from a computer’s web browser
- From the sidebar, select Settings
- Select Tax Documents
- Use the dropdown menu to select the relevant tax year
- Select Make changes next to the 1099-K document you want to correct
- Follow the prompts on the next pages to make and submit your changes
If changes are needed for any other form types, such as 1099-DA or 1099-MISC, contact taxsupport@venmo.com and provide details of the form type, tax year and requested change. If requesting a change to the name or tax ID on your 1099, click here to submit a completed W-9 form to the tax team, along with details of your request.
After submitting your request, you can expect to receive an update via email within 7 business days.
We are only able to make changes to your tax information after your documents have been issued. If you haven’t been notified about tax documents issued to you, your Venmo activity likely did not reach reportable thresholds.
This information is not intended to be and should not be construed as tax advice. You should consult your tax advisor regarding your reporting of these transactions.
Important Note on Amounts Reported on Form 1099-K: Venmo is required to report the gross amount without making any adjustments for credits, cash equivalents, discount amounts, fees, refunded amounts, shipping amounts, or any other amounts.
Venmo must include any transaction identified by the sender as being for goods or services.
See the video below for more info about how to access your tax forms and request corrections if needed.
I received an email from Venmo asking me to update my tax info
In some cases, Venmo may have incomplete or incorrect details about your tax info. When this happens, we need to correct the tax info associated with your account, so it matches the IRS’s records.
If we’ve contacted you about this, please follow the notification in your Venmo app to update your info. You can also find a link in the email we sent you.
If the legal name populated for your updates does not match your current legal name, a few documents are needed to update your information. Please follow these steps:
- Download a form W-9 from the IRS website: https://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/fw9.pdf
- Print and fill out the form with your current/updated information
- Sign the form
Please also provide a complete picture of one of the following (valid, unexpired) government-issued documents as proof of your identity:
- National ID (front and back)
- Residence Registration card (front and back)
- Driver’s license
- Passport
- Other photo ID issued by a government body
ALL of the following information must be visible on the document you provide to update your legal name:
- Photo
- Legal name (first and last)
- Date of birth
- Date of issue or expiry
- Signature
- Document ID Number
Once you’ve gathered those documents, you can send your completed & signed W-9 and identity document to taxsupport@venmo.com. Our Account Specialists will let you know once your info has been updated or if any additional information is required.
