We’re very sorry for your loss. If you need to close the Venmo account of a loved one who has passed, please contact Venmo Support. Our team will guide you through the next steps based on the status of the account.
What to include when contacting Support
When you contact our team to close your loved one’s account, please include the following details:
- The full first and last name of the deceased individual
- The email address and/or phone number associated with their Venmo account
Once our team locates the account, we’ll let you know if any additional documentation is needed.
To reach the Venmo Support team, go to Me > Settings > Get Help > Chat With Us in your Venmo app and ask for an agent.
You can check out Connect with Support on the Contact Us page for other options.
What documents does Venmo need to close a deceased relative’s account?
At a minimum, we’ll need a copy of the Death Certificate for the deceased individual.
If there is money in the account or crypto assets, we may also request the following:
- A valid government-issued photo ID from the person contacting us
- Proof of Address (so we can issue a check to the address provided if there is money in the account)
- Legal documentation showing you’re authorized to act on behalf of the estate, such as:
- A Probate Court order appointing you as Executor of the Estate
- Estate Administrator documentation
- Letters of Administration (typically granted by a Surrogate Court or probate registry when there are no executors named in a will)
- IRS Form W-9 for the Estate of the deceased (this can be obtained directly from the IRS' website at https://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/fw9.pdf)
For your privacy and security, please do not send these documents directly via email to our Support team. Once you connect with an agent, you’ll be given a secure document upload link through which you can share your documents.
For Venmo Credit Card holders
If your loved one had a Venmo Credit Card, the card will need to be closed before we can close the Venmo account. To assist during this difficult time, Synchrony (the issuing bank for the Venmo Credit Card) offers an online form to notify the Bank of the passing of a cardholder. You can access this form on the Synchrony website.
Once your submission is received, Synchrony will update the account record and handle any necessary further communications on the matter.
