Which payment method is used for purchases with participating online merchants?
There are a few different ways you can check or change what payment methods are being used for your purchases.
Some merchants allow you to select a specific payment method for checkout. To see whether you can choose your payment method for a merchant, follow these steps in the Venmo app:
- Go to the “Me” tab by tapping your picture or initials
- Tap the Settings gear in the top right
- Tap “Connected business”
- Select the individual merchant
- View/ Change your preferred payment method
If you have access to your Venmo balance and set your balance as the preferred payment method, you may also need to select a backup payment method in case there isn't enough money in your Venmo balance to cover your purchase.
How to select a backup payment method:
- Go to the “Me” tab by tapping your picture or initials
- Tap the Settings gear in the top right
- Tap “Backup Payment”
- Tap on the payment method you would like to use
- To enter a new payment method, tap "Add bank or card"
How to select a preferred payment method:
- Go to the “Me” tab by tapping your picture or initials
- Tap the Settings gear in the top right
- Select "Payment Method"
You may be prompted to select or change the pre-selected payment method during your next checkout. You can complete this by tapping on the payment method shown at the bottom of the screen.
You cannot change the payment method once you complete the transaction. For a smooth check-out experience, check the payment method (when available) before completing your purchase.
Why don't I see my credit cards as a payment option?
Due to limitations between Venmo and certain merchants, sometimes payment methods that are active on a user's account may not appear during checkout.
My payment method isn’t showing up for a particular merchant.
If a payment method is visible in the Payment Methods section of the Venmo app, and it doesn’t appear during checkout with a particular merchant, it means that the merchant is not able to process payments from that payment method. This can be due to network restrictions or merchant requirements.
