What privacy settings can I use?
There are three privacy options available for your payments:
- Public: Anyone on the internet may be able to see the transaction
- Friends only: The transaction will only be shared with your Venmo friends and with the other participant’s Venmo friends
- Private: We will not share the transaction anywhere other than in your personal transactions feed under the Me tab and with the other participant
If you use Venmo Groups, your group activity will be visible to other members of that group, regardless of your privacy settings.
What information does Venmo share when I send or receive a payment?
All payment participants can always see the amount, note, names of sender/recipient, and timestamp of the payment.
ONLY the sender of the payment can ever see the payment method used.
If your payment is set to Public or Friends, the payment note, names of sender/recipient, and timestamp of the payment will be shared.
What happens if my payment partner has a different privacy setting?
Venmo will always use the more restrictive setting selected between payment partners.
If you select Private for your payments, your Venmo activity will remain private - only visible to you and any other payment participants.
If your payment partner has a more restrictive privacy setting, we’d use that setting. For example - if you send a payment and mark it Public, but the recipient has their default audience set to Private, that payment will still be private and only be visible to you and the recipient.
How can I share my purchases on Venmo?
Purchases made using your Venmo Mastercard® Debit Card, Venmo Credit Card, and purchases from approved merchants are Private by default. You can change the privacy setting on any purchase to share them.
Can I comment on transactions?
You can keep the story going by commenting on your friends’ payment activities. In order to comment on a payment, you need to be friends on Venmo. Learn more about adding and removing friends.
