Do you need to add or remove members from one of your groups? Learn how to change who is in your Venmo group.
How do I add members to a group?
You can add members to a group in the Venmo app:
- Go to your Groups hub in the Me tab
- Tap on the relevant group
- Tap the Settings gear in the top right
- Tap Add more people under the Group members list
If you're Venmo friends with the new members, they’ll be added right away.
You don’t have to be friends with someone to invite them to your group, but if you aren’t friends on Venmo, the new member will receive an invitation rather than being added right away. That invitation will expire after 30 days.
You can still add expenses to the group and involve pending members. When they join the group, they’ll be able to settle expenses or add additional expenses. You can edit or delete the expense while the invitation is still pending.
Remember, you can’t add more than 30 members to your group.
Can I add someone to my group if they aren’t on Venmo yet?
You can send your group link outside of the Venmo app, like in your group text thread:
- Go to your Groups hub in the Me tab
- Tap on the relevant group
- Tap the Settings gear in the top right
- Tap Share a group link
If you send a group link to someone who doesn’t have Venmo yet, they’ll be asked to sign up for Venmo before they can participate in the group. They may also need to be approved by the group owner before they can join the group.
How do I remove a member of a group?
You can only remove group members who are all paid up – that is, there’s nothing due to or due from them. You can check the group summary to see if there’s anything waiting for the person you want to remove.
You also cannot remove the group owner. If the group owner wants to leave the group, they’ll need to transfer ownership first.
If the group member is eligible for removal, you can do so in the Venmo app:
- Go to your Groups hub in the Me tab
- In the relevant group, tap the Settings gear in the top right
- Tap on the person you want to remove
- Confirm that you want to remove them
If the removed member ever needs to rejoin the group, they’ll need to receive an invite from a remaining member.
